2020 has been a busy year for Google My Business (GMB).
GMB has launched so many new features at times it was difficult to keep up.
Bugs were fixed & unfixed, and then GMB had to adapt to the global pandemic for local business.
And now right at the end, Google has announced an update to their ranking algorithm.
There is no lack of discussion within the SEO community around this update.
This Google Dec 2020 core update is looking like a big one.
What does that mean for local business you say?
It looks as though local rankings are being affected, as a lot of local businesses and smaller sites are dropping in rankings.
In this update Google seems to be prioritizing:

- Always deliver quality content
- Get More Positive reviews
- Website loads fast & mobile friendly
- Optimised GMB even more important for local rankings
What Now ?
This update together with the May 2020 update, suggests more than ever that local businesses need well optimised Google My Business (GMB).
Businesses should use all of GMB features to rank for local: pages, categories, services, GMB posts, and most of all reviews.
If you are following best practices, it won’t be a problem.
This year wasn’t that great anyway; so let’s hope 2021 will open up fresh new opportunities for local business.
